Greetings, Fellow Catfish Enthusiasts,
Catfish Festival Week is here!
With information darting to and fro like a school of blue catfish during mating season, it’s imperative that we get right to the updates:
—The Annual Denver Catfish Festival MVP Luncheon was held yesterday at that fancy new Dairy Queen/Orange Julius on 16th and Champa in Denver. This year’s theme was “Into the Bowels of Celebration: Fried Foods and You” and featured an enthusiastic Keynote Address delivered by the owner of the co-MVP of the Fifth Annual Denver Catfish Festival, “Big John” Haskins of Super Bowl Porta Potties.
Thanks, Big John, for your dazzling, witty, and urbane exploration of intestinal health. And it’s great to know that the co-MVP DCF5 is still kickin’, currently working a construction site out off of Pena Boulevard.
—Did you notice? An article appeared in this month’s print copy of Cooking Light magazine entitled, “Which wines go best with fish and shellfish?”
Our favorite aquatic delicacy received quite the favorable mention:
CORNMEAL-CRUSTED PAN-FRIED CATFISH: Highlight the fresh simplicity of this recipe with a bright, acidic white wine that acts like a squeeze of lemon on the fish. Inexpensive American sparkling wine is a refreshing palate-cleanser for this down home dish.
The article goes on to recommend NV Domaine st. Michelle Cuvee Brut, NV Korbel Brut Rose, or NV Roederer Estate Brut as companion to fried catfish.
While we at the Denver Catfish Festival appreciate the sentiment and believe that the magazine was on the right track with their suggestions, how could Cooking Light possibly ignore Andre Peach Passion Champagne NV?
Anybody with half a culinary brain knows that, if not drinking ice cold Miller Lite with fried catfish, Andre Peach is the perfect companion. Its refreshingly playful, bright, and somewhat haughty taste is best experienced when accompanied by the last few bites of a warm hush puppy.
–It’s “Shark Week” on Discovery Channel, with one glaring omission. Despite the relentless efforts of our Denver Catfish Festival Publicity Team, The Discovery Channel chose not to run our self-produced three-hour documentary on the Silver-tipped Shark Catfish, found in brackish waters of Southeast Asia from Pakistan to Borneo.
This Pangasiidae family of catfish are known to be peaceful and plant-eating, although they do occasionally dabble in high-interest loans and have been known to attack, but only after provocation due to lack-of-repayment. Our expose into this seedy catfish underworld threatens to blow the top off of subaqueous organized crime.
Why won’t Discovery Networks get on board?
Makes you think.
–The Denver Catfish Festival Holiday Carollers delighted both the young and young-at-heart at the Commerce City Wal-Mart South Entrance on Sunday afternoon with Catfish Carols modern and classic, all the while raising $8.72 towards Festival expenses. Thank you, Dickensian A Capella Catfish Choralists!
–Our Expeditionary Haiku Prize Squadron Sponsored by Jagermeister has returned from an exhaustive mission to the four corners of the metro area in search of the most distinctive accolades attainable for our Haiku Contest Winners. Submissions will be accepted until 3:00 PM MDT on Festival Day. But why wait? Search your soul and create a Catfish-inspired Haiku today!
